Beyond Scandal: Decoding Crisis Management Communications in Non-Profits
Thursday 29 Feb 2024 - 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
- General Fundraiser (all fundraisers)
In the non-profit sector, effective crisis response and recovery is crucial when facing challenges. When crises strike, a crisis recovery team, typically led by executive leadership, works to assess the damage, and develop strategies to restore or enhance trust, which underpins relationships between donors and non-profits. Recent high-profile scandals have eroded public trust in non-profits. Trust is vital. Existing literature predominantly focuses on financial scandals and disclosure responses, limiting understanding of different crisis types and their moral implications. This session will present the findings of a study that shows how moral foundations influence responses to scandals within the non-profit sector. By analysing crisis management through this psychological lens, the study sheds light on donor and organisational views on crisis communication in both the short- and longer-term. Ultimately, this research strives to provide practical insights for non-profits and fundraisers in effectively managing and recovering from crises while preserving trust and ethical values.
